Check modifications before accepting claims
A raised intake, aftermarket filter or custom duct is not proof of water or dust protection. Ask who designed and installed it, how it seals and what maintenance it requires. Inspect drilled openings, joins and unsupported sections for movement and leakage. Do not copy operating limits from another vehicle fitted with similar equipment. Repeated cleaning can damage some filter media, while an over-oiled replacement can create different issues. Record part identity and fitment at each service so a cheap incorrect element does not become the default. Decide what the evidence supports
Consider two used candidates: one has a dirty but correctly sealed filter and consistent service invoices; the other has a spotless new filter, a distorted airbox and unexplained downstream dust. Apply the checks to a shortlist
For a T2 advertised with a recent filter replacement after a desert trip, ask to see the housing and the invoice for the correct element. If the seller cannot explain why a housing clip is missing, a new filter does not close the concern. The next useful step is a sealing and downstream-condition assessment, not another general video showing that the engine starts.
